What you get every issue:
Three curated healthcare AI stories with my take. Companies doing the work. Skills and techniques worth knowing. And opportunities worth pursuing. Just signal.

Three things worth your time this week:

  1. THE EU AI ACT STARTED ENFORCING — AND YOUR DEPLOYMENT GAP IS NOW A LEGAL REQUIREMENT
As of August 2, the EU AI Office and national authorities began enforcing transparency and governance mandates. Medical chatbots must disclose they're AI. High-risk AI-enabled devices now carry bias-mitigation, transparency, and post-market monitoring obligations.
The headline: "The EU AI Act is here."
The reality: The specific things regulators are now checking for — continuous monitoring, transparency, drift management — are exactly the connective-tissue work most teams skip to ship the demo. Governance stopped being a maturity choice and became a market-access gate.
My take: I've said the model is almost never the bottleneck. This week a regulator made that legally binding. If you sell into Europe, your post-market monitoring plan is now part of your product.

  2. HINGE HEALTH BOUGHT CYLINDER FOR $105M — THE SAME WEEK ROCK HEALTH NAMED THE MOATS
Hinge acquired virtual-first digestive care startup Cylinder (formerly Vivante) for $105M cash. Days earlier, Rock Health's H1 report ($7.4B raised, M&A busiest since 2021) named four durable moats: domain expertise, owning the workflow, hands-on delivery, and partnerships.
Why it matters: None of the four moats is the model. Investors and acquirers have converged on the same conclusion — differentiation lives in the connective tissue, not the weights.
The pattern: Point solutions are folding into multi-condition platforms to own more of the member relationship. Custom Health buying Spencer the same week is the same move in medication adherence.
My take: "Accuracy is the price of entry. The margin is the moat." This was the week the market said it out loud.

  3. 57% OF HOME HEALTH PROVIDERS ARE NOW USING OR EVALUATING AI
An HHAeXchange survey found more than 57% of home- and community-based service providers are actively using, testing, or evaluating AI tools.
But here's the nuance: "Evaluating" is not "deploying." A majority in-market means the bottleneck is shifting from awareness to the hard part — integration, adoption, and trust. That's where most of these evaluations will stall.
Why this matters for builders: The home-health buyer is finally in the room. Whoever helps them cross from pilot to production — not whoever has the flashiest model — wins this segment.

COMPANIES DOING THE WORK
Assort Health — AI patient-journey agents; just named a former Brigham CMO as first CMO to steer enterprise deployment.
Karoo Health — value-based cardiovascular OS connecting payers, providers, patients; the "connective layer" thesis, live.
Function Health — consumer-owned diagnostics scaling on a $450M debt raise (~$804M war chest).

AI TOOLS WORTH KNOWING
HealthSnap — AI virtual care management + RPM used by major health systems — the coordination layer sits above the device (CardioWatch-adjacent).
Wellinks — FDA-cleared Spire wearable + telehealth RPM, backed by the health system that deploys it.
LungVision (Body Vision Medical) — real-time AI intraoperative navigation — surgical-suite AI is the next imaging frontier.

WORK & PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Chief Medical Officer — Assort Health — first CMO hire; enterprise GTM build-out underway.
Chief Clinical Officer — Ellipsis Health — scaling clinical org for an AI care manager.
RPM Product / Clinical Ops — HealthSnap — $25M facility means implementation and product roles opening.

WHAT I'M WORKING ON:
Writing the model-resilience chapter of The Deployment Gap — using this week's EU enforcement as a live case study in why single-vendor dependence is a governance risk, not just a procurement one.
